The tighter/triller/nicer/trippier your shoes are, the higher ranked on the "coolness" scale you are. duh.

Wendy Bevan and the Film Camera

Since I left the class of black and white photography last year, i've been on somewhat of a "quest" for a vintage camera that manages to make photos look like they're 50 years old. I have finally found it. I also came across some photos taken by Wendy Bevan. She uses various lenses and techniques to produce photographs resembling those of Juergen Teller with a hint of Grandma's photo album.

Diana+ is a camera by Lomography that takes photographs full of soft & dreamy images, super-saturated colors, unpredictable blurring, and random contrast. It was originally created in the 60s in Hong Kong and is back! for 50x the original price$$!

Mariana Ramos's New CD Release: Mornador

Also, if you are looking to discover other Cape Verdean singers, take a look at MIMI's profiles of Lura in Lura's Light and Sara Tavares in Balancing The Melody Of The Diaspora.

U R A Fever

Ever since i discovered the Kills in early 2006 i've been captivated by their greasy hair and leather jackets. It's 60s underground meets the grungy heroin chic of the 90s. I guess what really gets me is that their music is full of the same sexually charged darkness. it balls.

Oprah Winfrey Announces The Launch Of "OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network"

Talk show host Oprah Winfrey will launch a new television network with Discovery Communications that will be a "natural extension" of her show, her company said Tuesday. "The Oprah Winfrey Network" will be a multi-platform media venture "designed to entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives," according to a joint statement with Discovery, which owns the Discovery Network and Animal Planet, among others.

The new channel will debut in 2009 in more than 70 million homes, on what is currently the Discovery Health Channel. "Fifteen years ago, I wrote in my journal that one day I would create a television network, as I always felt my show was just the beginning of what the future could hold," said Winfrey. "For me, the launch of 'The Oprah Winfrey Network' is the evolution of the work I've been doing on television all these years and a natural extension of my show," she said.

David Zaslav, president and chief executive of Discovery Communications, said the deal furthers the company's goals "to improve the quality of the networks while expanding the reach and success of our web presence." Zaslav said the effort would be broadened internationally but offered no details. "We start with 70 million" US households, he said. "We'll look to build on that around the world and on all platforms." He added, Winfrey "will have full editorial control over the joint venture and will be responsible for OWN's programming, branding and creative vision," the statement said.

Winfrey, 53, whose Harpo Productions will own half of the new channel, was an investor in the women-oriented Oxygen Network, which was sold last year to NBC Universal for 925 million dollars. In a conference call, Winfrey said, "I was an investor in Oxygen and the channel did not reflect my voice. This is very different." She offered no details on programming but said she wanted to see "the kinds of shows that make my heart sing."

Iman For Keep A Child Alive

Iman has teamed up with Keep A Child Alive to raise awareness for an innovative new program called ‘The Good Cents Initiative.’ Under ‘The Good Cents Initiative,’ Keep a Child Alive partners with businesses to help raise millions of dollars for their mission. Keep A Child Alive is asking companies to add one cent for Keep a Child Alive; maybe it's on the receipt for a cup of coffee, or a penny added to the price of a CD. All in all, the program is about really small amounts that quickly add up to make a huge difference. Such initiatives are designed to have very little cost to companies and a tiny cost to their customers; but they generate enough money to provide millions of children in Africa and India with lifesaving AIDS medication, support services, and orphan care. Less than a dollar a day keeps a child alive. To find out more, visit www.keepachildalive.org

Teddy Kalonga's Special Message

Teddy Kalonga is MIMI's December 2007 covergirl. In the Feature story, Teddy In Hollywood, Teddy talks about making it, and living the dream. Not all of Teddy's interview was published in the feature story; here's a special message she had to share:
.
"I'd like to take the opportunity to pay respect to my parents, who have both passed away recently. They taught me a lot about life and how to stand up and be strong for myself. They continue to be an inspiration to me. Also, to all my fans in East and Central Africa, I just want you all to know that even though I am married and not living in Africa these days, it doesn't mean that I am done! I have a very supportive husband and a great manager, and we have a lot of plans for you guys. Expect more from me!"
