Experience The New Ghanaian Cookbook “Akwaaba: A Taste Of Ghana”

Written by Sandra Amoako—My name is Sandra Amoako and I am the publisher and author of the new Ghanaian cookbook “Akwaaba: A Taste of Ghana”. I was born and raised in Ghana but currently live in the US. I have always believed that I was born with an entrepreneurial spirit and after graduating college with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration I began my long and at times rocky and complex path to making my dreams, passions and skills a reality.
.
Most people would be surprised to know that I was never a fan of the kitchen growing up. I preferred sports over recipes and I preferred to watch food being prepared than to actually cook something…although, I loved to bake! However, as one would say, “life is funny” and my life experiences from college until now have brought me full circle into combining my business skills with my creativity and my passion for food.
.
Publishing my first cookbook was actually a spur of the moment decision as I was having a conversation with one of friends on the phone two years ago. I think the topic (well, one of the many topics being discussed on that call) was about Ghanaian recipes and how lots of people, including younger Ghanaians, we had encountered over the years were always asking about how to prepare certain Ghanaian dishes. There was a LOT of research on writing a cookbook and how to publish a book over many months after I made a conscious decision to write a cookbook. I not only polished up my recipes on some Ghanaian dishes but I learned a lot about publishing, copyright, building a website and so on! It was a long and arduous journey and it was worth every step.
.
Today, I stand up and say I am a publisher and an author as I hold my first cookbook “Akwaaba: A Taste of Ghana” in my hands and smile with pride. My cookbook offers a vibrant and fresh outlook on common, traditional and modern recipes from Ghana. It also offers easy-to-follow recipes, helpful hints, fun facts about Ghana and cultural information on Ghana. This is a Ghanaian cookbook that both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians will appreciate and the hope is that it not only allows people of other cultures to experience a little part of what Ghana has to offer but also promote Ghana and Ghanaian food worldwide! At the moment, the cookbook can be ordered online but hopefully in the next couple of months, “Akwaaba: A Taste of Ghana” will be found in bookstores in Ghana, USA and other countries. For more information on the cookbook or to place an order, visit www.alikobooks.com. You can also follow me on twitter.com/SandraAmoako or join me on Facebook at www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=169729016745.

Well, its nearly New Years Eve-does everyone have their party frocks and bottles of Champagne ready??!

We are spending NYE's in Besancon, France and have not managed to book anywhere for dinner so no doubt we will find ourselves toasting the new year with a simple meal of jambon, comté and thick slices of baguette in our hotel room....and a bottle of Billecart-Salmon, of course!

p.s. I just want to take the opportunity to thank all my readers (and particularly all those people who allowed me to take their photograph-without you guys there would be no photos and no blog!) for your support this year, I am overwhelmed by your kindness and encouragement. I have met some tremendous people, and formed some wonderful friendships through photography and blogging. I feel very fortunate that life has taken me on this path. Thanks so very much everyone :))
And HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Naomi, working the laced-boots, little layered skirt and athletic top look.

p.s. Hope you all had an absolutely wonderful Christmas day wherever you are in the world. We are in the Dordogne region of France staying with friends in an incredibly beautiful converted barn. It is wonderful and relaxing which is just as well as we spent 22 arduous hours getting here from London by train, ferry and car-lets just say that Eurostar messed us around BIG TIME and I (nor my friend who is pregnant with twins) haven't quite forgiven them yet :) We had a fantastic clear day yesterday (boys were wearing t-shirts!) but there is an enormous fire to keep us warm as soon as it gets a bit chilly (we do seem to be getting through an uncanny amount of wood- I suspect none of us really know how to make a proper fire other than throwing lots of wood and kindling at it). We had slow-roasted goose and chicken for Christmas luncheon which was rather an experience- nothing like trying to remove the head of one's goose (it was dead but the French way is to leave same in tact for the lucky chef to, um, "deal with") on Christmas morning! Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and Jamie would be proud :)) Bûche de Noël and cheeses for pudding, and lots of lovely red wine and champagne while we were preparing it all.

Well, it is almost 3:30pm now so time for my afternoon nap;-)

Joyeux Noel et Bonne année!

London Fashion Weekend...The Essex Couple

I photographed Sally-Ann Grane and her man, Stuart Aitken, back at London Fashion Weekend (just after LFW).

Stuart and Sally-Ann are from Essex and had come to London for the day for Fashion Weekend.

Adore Sally-Ann's bustier: perfect for the SS '10 lingerie (and lace) trend.

p.s. Loving the new Sonia Rykiel for H&M lingerie collaboration: Big Pants? Yes please :))

Stockholm Street Style...Marion

The beautiful Marion from Marion Rocks blog who I met randomly in Paris earlier this year. Marion has since moved to Stockholm to study and I was able to catch up with her when I went to Stockholm :)
p.s. Check-out Marion's latest post featuring the fab Filippa Smeds- LOVE the photos of Filippa in THE SNOW!

Stockholm Street Style...Anna

Anna Wahlin. Love her puff-shoulder dress and especially the loose plaits in her hair- I think it gives the directional dress a softer, more girly look. The print reminds me of Christopher Kane's leopard print or the Stephen Sprouse Louis Vuitton leopard print.

p.s. Visiting Stockholm in the depths of winter means not a lot of daylight (which makes it a little bit difficult for photographs if you only use natural light) but one of the upsides is that a lot of the shops have gorgeous little lanterns outside which they light as soon as darkness falls. So pretty. Oh yes, and then there is the prospect of spending hours tucked away in cosy cafes slurping enormous bowls of hot chocolate (Chokladkoppen in Gamla Stan), eating fantastic warming meals at Nytorget Urban Deli in SOFO (the staff are lovely- as is everyone I encountered in Stockholm- and the smörrebröd set dish at lunchtime is fantastic value) and sipping champagne at the Bollinger Champagne Bar at the Hotel Stureplan.

My favourite stores?: Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Acne, Grandpa, Pitt Stop, Tjallamalla, Byredo perfume store....and plenty more that I didn't note down in my moleskine.

Stockholm Street Style....Suit-able

Suit+Prada Sneakers= Suit-able :)

Shuga, An MTV Staying Alive Drama Set In Nairobi, Kenya

Written By: Staff Writer—If you haven’t heard about Shuga, the television drama that has Kenyans glued to their small screens, you can now watch the series online. While Shuga is part of a broader HIV prevention campaign, it is not your typical after school special. Following the lives of six college students living life on the fast lane, no topic is too taboo to explore on Shuga—love, sex, alcohol, and money are all a part of the students' risky behavior. Take a look for yourself by watching episode 1 of Shuga below:

Shuga is the brainchild of MTV’s award winning Staying Alive Campaign, which addresses sexual health within the context of national cultures and norms. Get more information at: igniteblog.staying-alive.org/category/kenya and watch the remaining episodes of Shuga at vimeo.com/tag:shuga.
