Snapshots: Sweet Salone "Portraits Of Contemporary Sierra Leone" By Sophia Spring

Written By: MIM!Photographer Sophia Spring's ‘‘Sweet Salone’’ project is a series of portraits of Sierra Leoneans today. She says about the project: ‘‘It is a project that aims to give a small insight into the lives of some of the individuals that make up this vibrant country. For too long Sierra Leoneans have been depicted in a less than positive light. It is time that this outdated portrayal is finally discarded.’’ Her photograph above tells the story of Abubakar Kamara (19):
Abubakar was only 8 years old when he watched his father and grandmother being murdered by rebel troops. On that day his left leg was also amputated, in what can only be described as an act of senseless cruelty. Today, at the age of 20, he is surprisingly nonchalant about the horrors that he faced at such an early age. Perhaps this is because his story is not unique in a country that saw thousands of men, women and children brutally dismembered during the violence of their decade long civil war. Abubakar actively shuns sympathy, and feels that his disability should not hinder his future chances of success. As a member of Sierra Leone’s amputee football team he’s already accomplished a great deal, and is something of a local hero in this football mad country.

Aminatta Forna's The Devil That Danced On Water, A Daughter's Memoir

Written By: Nicole Parker-Jones—Journalist turned novelist Aminatta Forna saw her father for the last time on July 30, 1974; she was 10 years old. Her father, a prominent political figure, was convicted for allegedly attempting a coup to overturn the government and as a result executed.

In The Devil That Danced On Water, Aminatta searches for the truth about her father's execution in Sierra Leone. Part memoir, part history, the book is an unmatched look at Sierra Leonean politics told in a riveting story.

I am a big fan of Aminatta's work and also recommend her most recent book, The Memory Of Love, currently available in the UK.

African Booty Scratcher: A Short Film By Nikyatu Jusu

Filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Sierra Leonean immigrant parents. Her passion for film led her to pursue an M.F.A. in the competitive film program at New York University, where she is currently studying.

Nikyatu recently released her first short film African Booty Scratcher (which Nikyatu wrote and directed), a coming of age story where West African tradition conflicts with American idealism and the protagonist Isatu is forced to reassess her alliances. The short film has earned Nikyatu several awards and festival acceptances. She was a finalist in the American Black Film Festival's shorts division enabling African Booty Scratcher to be acquired by HBO, where it is currently airing. Below, watch African Booty Scratcher:

And The Movie Nominees Are ...

Djimon Hounsou (Benin) is an award show favorite, already picking up 3 nominations this year for his role in Blood Diamond. In 2006 Hounsou was nominated for and won two awards in the Best Supporting Actor Category at the Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards as well as the National Board of Review. 2007 is looking even better with 4 nominations for: (1) a Screen Actors Guild Award (Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role), (2) a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award (Best Supporting Actor), (3) a Black Reel Award (Best Supporting Actor) and (4) an NAACP Award (Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture). Is an Oscar nod next?

Chiwetel Ejifor (Nigeria) is on a role as well (excuse the bad pun). His roles in Kinky Boots and Children of Men have earned him 2 Black Reel Awards nominations for Best Supporting Actor. He is also nominated for 2 Golden Globes; first, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for his role in the HBO TV Series Tsunami and second, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy for Kinky Boots. Two is definitely Chiwetel's lucky number and maybe he'll walk away with all two awards at the two respective award shows where he has been nominated!

African actresses are definitely holding their own in the award show circuit. Thandie Newton (Zimbabwe) picked up an NAACP Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture nomination for her role in the The Pursuit of Happyness and, for her role alongside Chiwetel Ejifor in Tsunami, Sophie Okonedo (Nigeria) picked up a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television.

As for movies about our favorite topic--Africa--that are doing well, so far The Last King of Scotland (a fictional account about former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada) and Blood Diamond (a fictional account about conflict diamonds originating from Sierra Leone) have generated a lot of positive critical buzz.
