Today Marks The 51st Anniversary Of Congo's Independence

Written By: MIM!After more than 70 years of colonial rule, the people of Congo rose up and claimed their freedom with a free and fair election, electing Patrice Lumumba. When Patrice Lumumba was elected he declared, "The Republic of the Congo has been proclaimed, and our country is now in the hands of its own children. Together, my brothers, my sisters, we are going to begin a new struggle, a sublime struggle, which will lead our country to peace, prosperity, and greatness. Together, we are going to establish social justice and make sure everyone has just remuneration for his labor.
We are going to show the world what the black man can do when he works in freedom, and we are going to make of the Congo the center of the sun's radiance for all of Africa. We are going to keep watch over the lands of our country so that they truly profit her children. We are going to restore ancient laws and make new ones which will be just and noble. We are going to put an end to suppression of free thought and see to it that all our citizens enjoy to the full the fundamental liberties foreseen in the Declaration of the Rights of Man. We are going to do away with all discrimination of every variety and assure for each and all the position to which human dignity, work, and dedication entitles him. We are going to rule not by the peace of guns and bayonets but by a peace of the heart and the will. And for all that, dear fellow countrymen, be sure that we will count not only on our enormous strength and immense riches but on the assistance of numerous foreign countries whose collaboration we will accept if it is offered freely and with no attempt to impose on us an alien culture of no matter what nature."

Artist Jack Smith

Rarely do I come across anyone that inspires me to the extent that Jack Smith has. I stumbled across his work the other day and was completely mesmerized. Smith began his work as a photographer when he moved to New York City and opened a small portrait studio. He would take photographs of his customers then attempt to lure them to his back studio to coax them into costumes with erotic undertones among elaborate sets. Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis is a documentary about the artist that reveals his eccentric qualities, his hatred of our capitalistic society, and his unbelievable talent that has gone largely unrecognized to this day. I highly recommend renting it if you can. If you are in Austin there is a copy available at Vulcan Video. Normally I don't go on like this about a film but the imagery throughout was breathtaking and will undoubtably influence my own work in the future.

This is a still from Jack Smith's Flaming Creatures. It was his only film ever truly considered to be "finished" it was also banned in several cities and countries because of its controversial content. The public's reception of Smith's first film greatly impacted his drive to create more films. He was upset that his work was banned and because of this directed Normal Love, a film he felt could not and would not be banned.

This is a photograph from the ballet Beauty and the Beast that Tony Duquette designed the costumes and set for. Duquette and Smith were active during roughly the same time period but they existed in completely different socioeconomic circles. Both the work of Duquette and Smith shows the same type of fascination with "exotic" color palettes and over the top scenery. I imagine the two would have made some amazing work together.

Tony Duquette, being primarily an interior designer, is best known for his elaborate and decadent rooms like the one above.

New Summer buy: Missoni dress

The tropical weather has started here, and isn't there a better way to celebrate that than with a missoni dress? I have always dreamed about a missoni dress, but I never found one that had a classic print and shape, degrading colour effect or the right price. So I stuck to my more budget-friendly missoni zig-zag scarfs. And then I found this amazing flame print dress on ebay which answered all my requirements! I always get a kind of adrenaline rush when I find something I am looking for such a long time!
Just a few days before the missoni sale on the outnet, but I decided the chances were small I would find another perfect missoni dress there (little did I know...) So soon I will have a lot of missoni garments and I love it, the perfect knitting, the great colours..... I really needed some WOW-factor summer clothes. Can't wait for my other Missoni treats to arrive!

Soweto's Black Porcelain's Single Butterflies Is A Hit!

Written By: MIM!Soweto born singer and songwriter Black Porcelain, who is currently in the studio finishing her debut album, Invincible Summer, says she is pleasantly surprised by the success of her lead single from the album, Butterflies. “I called the album Invincible Summer as it has been a very long journey with many rejections on the way. I was inspired by an Albert Camus quote (in the depth of winter, I finally realised that within me there lay an invincible summer', which described this journey so well ... honestly, I think we out did ourselves [with the single Butterflies] because I don’t even have an album or a label.” Listen to Butterflies below and let us know if you are excited about Black Porcelain’s upcoming album.

5 piece french wardrobe: in retrospective

It is always good to look back at things you did well or in which things you failed.
Looking back at the past three months I am very happy with my five special purchases and I have also found some amazing basics!
First here is the list I made in March + what I bought:
1: embellished sandals ---> bought some from Supertrash, exactly what I was looking for except for the quality, the embellishment is already a bit loose.
2: multicoloured skirt ---> after a long search I finally found the Isabel Marant skirt I wanted for such a long time, it's pure perfection!
3: breathtaking party dress ---> can I say more about this 3.1 Phillip Lim dress?
4: colourfull tank top ---> This Helmut Lang top has only one color but is definitely an eye-catcher! The soft is feathery thin, but feels so luxurious!
5: ?? ---> my Zara pink pants already stretched too much after a few times of wear and are too wide now, I will probably turn them into hotpants, as I like hotpants to be a little bit oversized.
And the Patrizia Pepe jacket is just amazing, wore it three times in one week, it is special, but not too flashy for everyday use!

I can say that everything I was looking for was found, my only small regrets is that the quality of my pants and sandals are not amazing, so they probably won't last very long.
I also bought one thing too much, because I just could not let that amazing Patrizia Pepe jacket pass when it was on sale with 50 % discount... But I made up and sold 2 Isabel Marant jackets, yes I made up big time!

For the summer my wishlist is simple:
Colours, prints and lots of Missoni. And for the basics the perfect black skinny jeans and a light beige Blazer. There are already some amazing items on my way and I am afraid I wont make it with 5 pieces...
My basics list will come up soon!!!

Inspiration: Josephine Baker

Shoes by Jeffrey Campbell

The top is a photo of Josephine Baker in one of her most well known outfits - a skirt made of bananas. The bottom video shows footage of one of her most infamous dances called "Danse Sauvage" in which she captured the white man's highly romanticized and convoluted vision of african tribal culture.

A much more satirical approach to Baker's work in The Triplets of Belleville.

Shoes by Charlotte Olympia

Two of my favorite paintings by Henri Matisse. The bottom one is at the MoMA in New York, the colors are so much more brilliant when you see them in person.
